In the past few years, granite has become more popular than ever, and for good reason. Making it an ideal material for a countertop, granite is a natural stone that is beautiful, and extremely durable, scratch resistant and handles heat well. For any homeowner that has granite countertops, effectively cleaning granite counters and keeping them stain-free is a must. With this in mind, we at Busy Bee Cleaning & Janitorial Service would like to offer some tips to keep and maintain clean granite countertops in your home.
Cleaning to Bring Back Shine to Cloudy Granite Countertops
1) React Immediately. Be quick to wipe away spills whenever it is possible. It is still a good idea to clean up spills as soon as possible and not give them a chance to absorb into the stone’s surface even if the granite has been sealed.
2) Stay Away from Harsh Products. Bleach or ammonia and other harsh products should be avoided. Stay clear from Windex or vinegar when cleaning granite as the acid in these liquids can break down and deteriorate the sealant is also strongly recommended.
3) Appropriate Cleaners. You can use cleaner specifically designed for granite countertops, or you can prepare a safe DIY solution. In a spray bottle, combine together about 8 ounces of water and ½ tsp of mild dish soap. It will make a great granite cleaner with little effort. You can also add a few drops of lemon essential oil to give the cleaner a fresh natural fragrance without the citric acid of lemon juice.
4) Invest in Microfiber Cloths. Since they can leave scratch marks and may wear down the counter’s sealant, you need to avoid using abrasive scrubbing sponges. Use a microfiber cleaning cloth, instead. Using microfiber cloths are safe and can still ensure the cleanliness of the granite surface.
5) Use a Baking Soda Paste to Treat Tough Stains. Combine baking soda and water and work into a paste for extra tough stains. Simply spread the paste on the offensive spot and let it sit overnight. The baking soda should have pulled out much of the stain by morning and you can wipe it clean.
6) Dry the Granite. Always make sure to wipe the counters dry after they are cleaned. You can cause lasting stains since granite is less porous than most stones, but it will still absorb moisture.
